New book: Alan Weisman's Hope Dies Last

Stories of Regeneration and Hope

Acclaimed author Alan Weisman, known for "The World Without Us," has released a new book featuring stories of ecological regeneration around the globe. "Hope Dies Last" includes a chapter on New Zealand's regenerative agriculture movement, with AgriSea and several of our partner farmers featured prominently.

From Degradation to Regeneration

Weisman traveled to New Zealand to document farmers who are reversing soil degradation and proving that restoration is possible. The book profiles several farms in the Rere ki Uta, Rere ki Tai research program, showing how focused attention on soil biology can transform farm productivity and environmental outcomes.

AgriSea's Role

The book explores how AgriSea's seaweed-based biostimulants support the regeneration process by:

  • Feeding soil microbiomes rather than bypassing them
  • Enhancing plant resilience and nutrient uptake
  • Reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers
  • Supporting the transition to regenerative systems

Farmer Stories

Weisman spent time with several New Zealand farmers, documenting their journeys:

  • Miah and Jenny Smith (Wilith Farm): From struggling with conventional methods to thriving with soil-focused approaches
  • Mohi Beckham (Scylla Farm): Using maramataka (Māori lunar calendar) alongside modern science
  • George Hopa (Tainui Group Holdings): Reconnecting indigenous landowners with their whenua through regeneration

A Global Perspective

The book places New Zealand's regenerative agriculture movement in a global context, showing how farmers worldwide are discovering that working with nature rather than against it produces better outcomes for everyone – farmers, consumers, and the environment.

Why "Hope Dies Last"

The title reflects Weisman's conviction that even in the face of climate change and environmental degradation, there are reasons for optimism. The farmers featured in the book demonstrate that change is possible, and that agriculture can be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

Available Now

"Hope Dies Last" is available at bookstores nationwide. AgriSea is honored to be part of these important stories of regeneration and hope.
