At this year's Evoke Ag event in Australia, thought leaders Bren Smith and Clare Bradley explore the future of food and farming. Bren presents a bold vision for how the ocean could become our next great agricultural frontier through open-source 3D ocean farming. This pioneering concept features underwater vertical farms using simple scaffolding with ropes anchored below, supporting seaweeds, mussels, and clams in a delicate dance with the sea. This 3D ocean farming method requires no feed, no fertilizers, no fresh water, and no land—only sunlight and the ocean itself. It's farming that "disappears" into the water, invisible from the surface, yet abundant in yield. This scalable solution could stretch across coastlines, restoring marine ecosystems while feeding communities globally. As water scarcity and climate pressures mount, the sea holds answers to our food future through nature's restorative, regenerative design.

Dubbed the "Goop of the future," this seaweed byproduct breakthrough puts the NZ company ahead of the game with a highly sought-after derivative that could change every sector, from electronics to healthcare. AgriSea has opened the world's first biorefinery facility that converts a seaweed process byproduct into nanocellulose, a material with countless applications in agriculture and industry. What was previously dried and converted into low-value products has been transformed into material with exceptional properties. This tasteless, odourless material resembles putty or a gel depending on water content, and its value comes from being an environmentally friendly carrying agent for chemical and biological matter across multiple industries.

Rere Ki Uta, Rere Ki Tai is a collaborative research project that aims to build more resilient, profitable and healthy farms for land and environment, families and farming communities across Aotearoa New Zealand. Together, this collective of farmers and researchers are sharing knowledge, experience, and science to test ideas at the forefront of soil management. The project explores whether farming in ways that look after soils (tread lightly) might be better for everyone, and if so, how to do it. A haka by multiple Government agencies was a humbling accolade for Paeroa company AgriSea at the announcement they won Hi-Tech Māori Company of the Year at the NZ Hi-Tech Awards. Three-year research programme led by Scion testing properties of NZ seaweeds (Undaria pinnatifida and Ecklonia radiata) resulted in commercial licensing of nanocellulose hydrogel to AgriSea. These hydrogels absorb up to 1000 times their weight in water and have applications in burn wound dressings, biomedical engineering, drug delivery, cosmetics, and agriculture. Created from what was a low-value waste stream, this innovation creates high-value products using significantly cheaper methods than current industry standards.

Led by Professor in Livestock Production Dr. Pablo Gregorini, the co-funded PhD student project examines seaweed-based products and ruminant health. Early findings indicate cows supplemented with AgriSea show increased Body Condition Score, Volatile Fatty Acid Concentration, reduction in methane emissions, and reduction of antioxidant stress.

AgriSea self-funded marine scientist Tim Haggitt to trial commercial seaweed harvesting between Waihau Bay and Cape Runaway.
