AgriSea for Avocados

Build stronger, more resilient avocado trees from the ground up. AgriSea's seaweed-based nutrition works with plant and soil biology to support flowering, fruit retention and orchard resilience.

Avocado production is one of the most biologically demanding horticultural systems. From the sensitivity of flowering and pollination through to the challenges of fruit drop, salinity stress and root disease, growers require a programme that strengthens tree health throughout the entire production cycle.

AgriSea's seaweed-based biostimulants harness the natural power of sustainably harvested New Zealand brown kelp (Ecklonia radiata), delivering a rich profile of minerals, trace elements and bioactive compounds that support root health, nutrient uptake and balanced canopy growth.

Cold-brewed using AgriSea's proprietary process, these products preserve the natural matrix of phytohormones, phlorotannins and polysaccharides found in seaweed. This helps strengthen tree resilience to environmental stress while supporting improved flowering, fruit set and fruit development.

By enhancing plant metabolism and supporting healthy soil biology, AgriSea programmes help avocado growers build stronger orchards, improve productivity and maintain long-term orchard health.

The AgriSea Difference: Why Our Brewing Process Matters

Not all seaweed extracts are equal. The majority of commercial products on the market are produced through alkaline or heat-based hydrolysis - processes that use temperatures of 70–100°C and harsh chemicals such as potassium hydroxide or sodium carbonate to break down the seaweed biomass. While these methods are efficient for volume, they come at a significant biological cost.

AgriSea's cold-brewing process uses no heat, chemicals, freezing, drying or other processes that denature the sensitive balance of micronutrients. By processing Ecklonia radiata at ambient temperature through mechanical blending, hydration and gentle pressing, we preserve the complete natural matrix of bioactive compounds in their native, functional state.

For avocado growers, this matters in three critical ways:

  • Intact phytohormones drive fruit set and retention. Research shows seaweed extract applied before and during flowering can increase fruit retention by up to 42%. This effect is dependent on the hormonal signals (cytokinins, auxins) remaining biologically active - compounds that conventional heat extraction destroys.
  • Preserved phlorotannins deliver antioxidant and stress protection. Ecklonia radiata's eckol-type phlorotannins are central to its capacity to reduce oxidative stress in plants under heat, drought and salinity - all key pressure points for avocado. In alkaline-extracted products, these compounds are oxidised into inactive pigments. In AgriSea, they remain intact.
  • High-Molecular Weight alginates build the soil your roots depend on. Avocado is notoriously susceptible to Phytophthora and root disease. Healthy, well-structured soil with an active microbiome is the primary defence. AgriSeas seaweed biostimulants retain their large-molecule alginates, improving soil aggregation, aeration and moisture retention while feeding beneficial microbial populations.

Application Rates and Timing

Follow these recommended application rates and timing for optimal avocado orchard performance.

Foliar Nutrition

Target: The Canopy

Mix Rate: Minimum 1:100 ratio with water

Always monitor your specific orchard's development rather than the calendar date.

Growth Stage

NZ Timing

Dose Rate

Specific Intention

Bud Burst & Spring Flush

Sept – Oct

5L/ha or 2L/ha every 4 weeks

Photosynthetic Surface Area: To push out large, healthy "Spring Flush" leaves. Larger leaves act as bigger solar panels, creating the carbohydrate reserves needed to carry a heavy crop.

Pre-Flower Opening

Oct – Nov

5L/ha or 2L/ha every 4 weeks

Pollination Success: To deliver natural plant hormones (auxins/cytokinins) and trace elements directly to the flower panicles. This strengthens the flower and increases the viability of the pollen.

Early Fruit Set

Dec – Jan

5L/ha or 2L/ha every 4 weeks

Stress Mitigation: To prevent "Summer Drop." When the tree is stressed by heat or fruit load, it produces abscisic acid to drop fruit. Foliar nutrition counters this by providing a boost of biostimulants to keep the fruit attached.

Summer Flush & Fruit Sizing

Feb – March

5L/ha or 2L/ha every 4 weeks

Crop Consistency: To ensure the tree has enough energy to grow this year's fruit and develop the floral buds for next year. This helps smooth out "on" and "off" years.

Soil & Ocean Nutrition

Target: The Root Zone (Drip Line)

Mix Rate: Minimum 1:100 ratio with water. Or 5% solution

Intention: To build soil structure, stimulate beneficial biology, and replenish the mineral "bank account."

Growth Stage

NZ Timing

Dose Rate

Specific Intention

At Planting

Planting

5% Solution Root Dip

Rapid Root Development: reduce transplant shock and aid the formation of feeder roots which are essential for nutrient and water uptake in avocados' shallow root systems.

Pre-Spring Root Activity

Aug – Sept

5L Soil Nutrition
5-10L Ocean Nutrition

Microbial Wake-up: To stimulate the soil fungi and bacteria before the spring demand hits. This improves nutrient cycling, making locked-up minerals (like Phosphorus) available to the new white feeder roots.

Peak Flowering & Fruit Set

Nov – Dec

5L Soil Nutrition
5-10L Ocean Nutrition

Mineral Fortification: To provide a massive spectrum of 60+ minerals and bioactives during the tree's highest demand period. This ensures the tree doesn't "run lean" on trace elements while trying to set fruit.

The "Second" Root Flush

Feb – March

5L Soil Nutrition
5-10L Ocean Nutrition

Root Longevity: To support the secondary root growth period. Healthy biology in late summer helps the tree scavenge for water more effectively, reducing drought stress during the final stages of fruit sizing.

Post-Harvest / Dormancy Prep

Post-Pick (Autumn)

5L Soil Nutrition
5-10L Ocean Nutrition

Recovery & Reserve Building: To replenish the tree after the massive "drain" of harvest. This is the most vital timing for NZ growers; it ensures the tree enters winter with high mineral reserves, preventing "winter yellowing."

Soil+ and Combo+

Target: Groundspread application

Soil+ rate: 20 kg/ha

Combo+ rate: 30 kg/ha

Apply two to four times a year with your fertiliser program.

Frequently asked questions

How does AgriSea support avocado production?

AgriSea's cold-brewed Ecklonia radiata products deliver a complete and bioavailable profile of phytohormones, phlorotannins, polysaccharides, amino acids, vitamins and minerals that support the key stages of avocado production - root health, fruit set, fruit development and post-harvest recovery. Because our brewing process preserves these bioactives in their natural, functional state, the plant receives signals it can readily act upon.

Why does the cold-brewing process make a difference for avocados specifically?

Avocado growers face specific challenges where the intact bioactives in cold-brewedEcklonia radiatadeliver the most value: fruit set improvement requires active cytokinin and auxin signals; salinity and drought stress tolerance requires intact phlorotannins and osmoprotectants; and root health in Phytophthora-prone soils requires the soil-building alginates and microbial stimulation that only cold-brewed products can provide. Conventional heat-extracted products lose these compounds during processing.

Can AgriSea help with Phytophthora pressure?

AgriSea is not a fungicide and should not be used as a replacement for an integrated Phytophthora management programme. However, by improving overall root health, stimulating beneficial soil microbial populations and building soil structure, AgriSea supports the tree's natural resilience as part of a broader disease management approach.

Will AgriSea increase my fruit size?

Yes, when properly integrated with an adequate nutrient programme. Research confirms that as fruit retention increases under a seaweed extract programme, trees can carry a higher fruit load - which means the overall nutrient demand increases. Growers should review and potentially augment their fertilisation programme during rapid fruit growth to ensure the additional fruit load translates into marketable fruit size, not smaller fruit.

How does AgriSea help with alternate bearing?

Post-harvest application is a critical part of the AgriSea programme for this reason. By replenishing depleted energy and nutrient reserves immediately after harvest and supporting vigorous root flushes, AgriSea helps the tree recover more quickly and prepare for the following season's floral bud differentiation - reducing the physiological stress that contributes to alternate bearing cycles.

Is AgriSea certified organic?

Yes. AgriSea products are BioGro Organic certified and Non-GMO certified, making them compatible with organic and premium production programmes.
