"We've got a drought on and we've got the greenest farm in the district."
Peter Abrahamson has been farming with AgriSea at Darfield for eight years. He's halved his fertiliser, cut his nitrogen budget to less than a third of the regional limit – and still grows as much grass as anyone around him.
Eight Years In – and It Still Surprises Him
Peter Abrahamson farms at Darfield in Canterbury. He came to AgriSea through a friend – a merino fattener who had won four years in a row and attributed his results to a simple principle: for every dollar spent on AgriSea, he got seven dollars back.
Eight years on, Peter is farming with a nutrient budget less than a third of the regional nitrogen limit, half the fertiliser he used to apply – and more grass than his neighbours during the driest stretch the district has seen in years.
What Eight Years of AgriSea Looks Like
Peter didn't get here overnight. He describes a gradual journey – trying things in a small way, tweaking, building confidence in the system. The results he talks about now are the product of patience and consistent application.
Fertiliser Halved in 3–4 Years
After being told by his fertiliser rep he couldn't add any more phosphate for three years, Peter was approached by an AgriSea rep who asked if he'd like to halve his fertiliser in five years. He did it in three or four.
Nitrogen at 59 kg/ha – vs a 190 kg Limit
The regional limit for synthetic nitrogen on grazed pasture is 190 kg N/ha/year. Peter's nutrient budget came in at 59 kg – less than a third of the cap. He still grows as much grass as neighbouring farms operating at full conventional rates.
More Feed in a Drought
During the driest period the district had seen in three years, Peter had more feed than anyone around him. He attributes this to water retention stored deep in the soil – a direct result of the improved soil biology built over eight years of AgriSea use.
Twice the Response from Nitrogen
Peter uses AgriSea Soil Nutrition as a foliar, mixed at 2,000 litres on a trailer with 4–5 units of nitrogen. His observation: "The AgriSea seaweed gives me twice the bang of the nitrogen because it is a foliar feed."
A Journey Built on Patience
Peter is clear that AgriSea is not a quick fix. The results he describes took years to build – but they compound. Here is how that journey unfolded on his farm.
First Contact – Fertiliser at Its Limit
Peter's fertiliser rep told him he was not allowed to add any more phosphate for the next three years. An AgriSea rep asked if he wanted to halve his fertiliser within five years. He decided to try it.
Fertiliser Halved
Ahead of the five-year target, Peter had already halved the fertiliser he was applying. The soil biology built through consistent AgriSea use was doing more of the work.
The Real Benefit Kicks In
"After five years I saw the real benefit out of it, when you go ahead leaps and bounds." The compounding effect of improved soil health, lower inputs and better water retention becomes clearly visible.
Saving Money, Outperforming Neighbours
Eight years in, Peter is spending less on inputs, carrying a nitrogen budget well under the regional limit, and growing more grass than neighbouring farms – including during drought. He is now planning to buy a second farm for his sons, with one condition: they have to use AgriSea.
In His Own Words
Some of the most direct observations from eight years of farming with AgriSea at Darfield.
"The AgriSea product is totally under-rated. For me, farming is multigenerational, and I don't want us to lose that knowledge."
"Everybody who comes onto the farm is really wowed by it. Seven people said 'I know that farm and it grows so much grass.'"
"When you farm, you are only looking at the top 25mm but what's underneath is the engine room."
"AgriSea is all about transparency and genuineness. They've always put more back into making it work."
"I can't get my head around the fact that people can't see it. For some people it's the first thing they want to cut, but people have to get their heads around how cost-effective it actually is."
"New Zealand farmers – our whole culture – is an instant pudding generation. We expect a nitrogen-like response to everything."
The Maize Story
As an example of what the system can produce, Peter points to his maize. Planted in early December and measured less than three months later, the results were striking enough to stop visitors in their tracks.
Peter applies AgriSea Soil Nutrition as a foliar, mixed at 2,000 litres on a trailer with 4–5 units of nitrogen. His observation is that the seaweed doubles the effectiveness of the nitrogen – meaning he gets the same response from half the input.
Regenerative Before It Had a Name
Peter has a wry view of what the farming world now calls "regenerative agriculture." He has been practising the principles for two decades – deferred grazing, reducing synthetic inputs, building soil biology – long before it became a mainstream conversation.
Soil Biology as the Engine Room
Peter's view is that most farmers only look at the top 25mm. AgriSea's value, as he sees it, is what it builds beneath the surface – the biological activity that improves water retention, nutrient cycling and long-term productivity.
Multigenerational Thinking
Peter wants to buy a farm for his sons. His one condition: they have to use AgriSea. "I want us to buy a farm for the boys, but the first rule is they have got to use AgriSea seaweed – and they agreed to that."
Recommended Product
This AgriSea product was used on Peter Abrahamson's farm to achieve dramatic fertiliser reduction while maintaining grass growth and improving drought resilience.

Soil Nutrition
